Crude is on the move….Phoenix Gas Prices Go With It….

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

Current E85 Will Call Price at our Plant     $2.019

Current B99 Biodiesel Will Call Price at our Plant     $2.379 (lightduty)

Crude closed on Friday a little over $72.00 a barrel. The price of crude almost immediately affects the price of gasoline/diesel at the retail pump.  All suppliers are working off the real time pricing of crude. Friday evening (6/12/09) the average price of gasoline in the Phoenix area was $2.69 and Diesel was $2.59.  Pundits speak about big oil getting ready for the summer drive time, so they are cranking up the price. However, when President Obama was on his tour of Egypt, OPEC announced they wanted the price of the barrel to be up by at least $10.00.  It is a combination of  OPEC Movement and that all refinery production in the United States has been reduced.  There are many factors and components that lead to the end result of what we pay at the pump.  Rest assured the retailer/station owner is second to last on the food chain of profit, with the Jobber being the last.  The retailer is being squeezed to earn any profit on the gasoline portion of his/her business, so when you see prices jump .05 in one day, rest assured it is not an arbitrary decision made by the retailer.  Prices move when the cost of the fuel moves, profits, if any, remain stagnant. Other mitigating factors in gasoline prices are the continued unrest in the Middle East and Venezuela and North Korea Developing Nuclear Grade Weapons seems to be making all markets nervous.

I know it is hard to believe that when you pull up to the gas pump and are trying to figure out how much gasoline you can afford to put in your vehicle, that countries an entire world away have impact on your decision…but they do. So do all of our elected officials in Washington….Read On.

Climate Bill In Congress and What it Means….

H.R. 2454   has passed the House Energy and Commerce Committee and is being bantered around from committee to committee for consideration and final recommendation for Floor vote legislation. The American Petroleum Institute believes the legislation is designed to restrict fossil fuel and potentially can affect gasoline prices by more than .75 per gallon, diesel prices by more than .85 per gallon and Jet A by more than .80 per gallon. The legislation would require refiners and manufacturers to acquire carbon dioxide pollution allowances that could be traded on a market as part of an effort to cut emissions 17% below 2005 levels by 2020. The measure, according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released a study of the bill that estimates the bill would produce $845.6 Billion in revenue and cost CONSUMERS more than $821.2 Billion through 2019.

I believe all Americans want to achieve smaller carbon footprints, a cleaner environment and be able to leave a healthier world to the next generations…however, a 10 year move on the back of the taxpayer perhaps is over reaching. Back to the drawing board, I say.  Tell me what you think….
